This writing style is part of the charm of the book, however and after a time you become used to it for the most part, though I wouldn’t say it was my favorite aspect of the story. This guy doesn’t want to change the colors of the sky. She is out of work because her daughter Judit, an accomplished violinist, has defected to the West some years earlier, and she is therefore blacklisted. I don’t know how much, if any, of this narrative comes from Bartis’ own life, but the story within this book is gut-wrenching and yet impossible to tear oneself away from.
That said, it is a beautifully told story, and it is translated by someone who has an excellent ear for English poetry. What if I’m not shocked? She’s the skeleton in the closet AND the crazy relative in the attic I’m from the American south and all of this is supposed to be common to us. We all look like ants! That was good for knowing what to do if you ever married Alfred Molina and moved to live in Iran with his tyrannical family.

The main character has spent fifteen years living at home with his reclusive mother after his sister abandoned them; his mother had actually bought a plot in the cemetery and held a mock funeral in which she buried her daughter’s things. It sucks you in immediately, it chews you, I love and look for good first sentences.

To this I say I’ve never committed any acts of incest. If there’s a problem with the book, I think it is momentum.
